Gregory of Nyssa’s “On the Human Image” as a reworking of Plato’s “Timaeus”
August 14, 2025 @ 5:15 PM – 6:30 PM
Plato’s Timaeus was the most important text in the ancient world, and beyond, on the subject of the universe, the structure of the cosmos and the human being within it, the nature of the soul, and providence. Gregory of Nyssa, in the late fourth century, I will argue, reworked the Timaeus in his On the Human Image of God (previously known as On the Making of Man), filling it with Christian content. By seeing Gregory’s work as a reworking of the Timaeus, we can gain a new perspective on the relationship between Christian theology and Greek philosophy, while also being offered a picture of God, creation, and the human being quite different than what would come after Augustine.

Gregory of Nyssa’s “On the Human Image” as a reworking of Plato’s “Timaeus” is an intriguing theme. I would like to join the virtual event.
