SUMMARY:Thriving Together
DESCRIPTION:How do we build learning communities that flourish?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat makes a school truly flourish—not just academically\, but as a whole community? SUMMARY:Christ as Saviour and Example
DESCRIPTION:The Importance of Keeping These in the Right Order for the Gospel and the Church\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do our beliefs about who Christ is and what He has done for us shape our understanding of the church’s role in the world? What happens when this order gets reversed\, and why does it matter for the church’s mission and message?  \n\n\n\nJoin Prof Kimlyn Bender as he explores these questions by looking at both the New Testament and insights from influential figures like Martin Luther\, Henri de Lubac\, and Eberhard Jüngel. By reflecting on how the church is meant to be God’s people\, the body of Christ\, and a community empowered by the Spirit\, we’ll discuss how these ideas shape the church’s identity and its calling in today’s world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Kimlyn J. Bender holds the Foy Valentine Chair in Christian Theology and Ethics at Baylor University. A prolific author and one of the world’s foremost ecclesiologists\, he recently edited The T & T Clark Companion to Ecclesiology. An ordained Baptist minister raised on the prairie of North Dakota\, he and his wife Trudy live in Waco and have three children. \n\n\n\nRefreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nThe session will not be recorded or livestreamed.

SUMMARY:Gregory of Nyssa's “On the Human Image” as a reworking of Plato's “Timaeus”
DESCRIPTION:Plato’s Timaeus was the most important text in the ancient world\, and beyond\, on the subject of the universe\, the structure of the cosmos and the human being within it\, the nature of the soul\, and providence. Gregory of Nyssa\, in the late fourth century\, I will argue\, reworked the Timaeus in his On the Human Image of God (previously known as On the Making of Man)\, filling it with Christian content. By seeing Gregory’s work as a reworking of the Timaeus\, we can gain a new perspective on the relationship between Christian theology and Greek philosophy\, while also being offered a picture of God\, creation\, and the human being quite different than what would come after Augustine.

SUMMARY:Bible. Sia and Toutai
DESCRIPTION:The name Sia-‘a-toutai was gifted to the college by Queen Salote Tupou III (1900–1965)\, to express her vision and to invite the commitment of the Methodist Church in Tonga – that sia and toutai are vital for biblical and theological education\, for doing church\, and for forming and transforming villages and kāinga. \n\n\n\n\nSia refers to the weaving of (new) nets (kupenga)\, for fishing. We will use sia at OBSA 2025 as a metaphor for methods of and processes for reading biblical texts\, for doing church\, and for forming communities – at home\, and in diaspora.\n\n\n\nToutai is one of the terms for fishing\, and it applies to fishing in the deep moana (tahi loloto)\, in shallow seas (tahi mamaha)\, and even on (is)lands (fanga\, ‘uta). The practice of toutai is not limited to fishy creatures\, with or without bones\, fins\, or scales\, but also to pleasant blooms and bodies.\n\n\n\n\nSia‘atoutai Theological College will host OBSA 2025 and the theme – Bible\, Sia and Toutai – affirms that Sia and Toutai are still relevant for biblical and theological studies\, and church ministry\, in Tonga and Pasifika. \n\n\n\nStreams \n\n\n\nThere will be six (6) streams at OBSA 2025\, and we invite presenters to locate their proposal in one of these streams (conceived assertively\, to invite creativity): \n\n\n\n\nBelonging – migration\, labour\n\n\n\nSia – method\, ways\n\n\n\nToutai – praxis\, labour\n\n\n\n\n\nLotu – worship\, church\n\n\n\nGender – dignity\, responsibility\n\n\n\nClimate – justice\, resilience
