SUMMARY:Auckland Ecumenical Lay Preachers Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The Bible and Violence\n\n\n\nAuckland Ecumenical Lay Preachers Gathering\n\n\n\nDr Emily Colgan of Trinity Methodist Theological College will join us to explore Violence in the Bible. \n\n\n\nThe Bible is a book that’s filled with violence. Sometimes\, it’s easy for us to recognize the violence being described in a text; at other times\, it’s hidden in plain sight\, and we might not even notice it’s there. What can we learn from biblical “texts of terror” that depict all manner of violence? And how might they speak to us about the violent acts\, words\, and ideas that we encounter in our world today? In this session\, Emily will share her thoughts on the enduring significance of biblical violence and the ways that it can inform our own understandings of contemporary violence. There will also be time for Q&A and Emily challenges us – “Ask Me Anything!” (about the Bible!). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Emily Colgan is Assoc Professor and the Ranston Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Trinity Methodist College\, Auckland. Emily is a bit of a Bible nerd who is utterly passionate about biblical interpretation incontemporary contexts. \n\n\n\nAfter completing a conjoint degree in Arts (Māori Studies) and Theology (Biblical Studies)\, Emily pursued postgraduate qualifications in Biblical Studies (Hebrew Bible). She earned her PhD in Theology in 2015. Emily worked as a tutor and a lecturer at the University of Auckland throughout her doctoral study. After submitting her PhD\, Emily worked as an adjunct lecturer for St John’s Theological College (in Tai Rawhiti) and the Pacific Theological College (in Suva\, Fiji). Emily began working at Trinity College in November 2015. \n\n\n\nEmily’s research focuses on the relationship between the Bible and contemporary social imaginaries\, asking about the ways in which biblical texts interact with communities in the present. She is particularly interested in ecological representations within the Bible and what it means to read Scripture in the context of climate change. Emily is currently working on an ecological commentary of the Book of Jeremiah for the Earth Bible Commentary series (Bloomsbury). She has also written chapters on the Bible and ecological thinking in The Oxford Handbook on Bible and Ecology (Oxford University Press\, forthcoming)\, The Bible and Art: Perspectives from Oceania (Bloomsbury\, 2017)\, The Nature of Things: Rediscovering the Spiritual in God’s Creation (Wipf and Stock\, 2016)\, and Sexuality\, Ideology and the Bible: Antipodean Engagements (Sheffield Phoenix\, 2015). \n\n\n\nEmily is also very interested in biblical depictions of gender and violence. Her most recent publication is a multi-volume work\, which she co-edited with Caroline Blyth and Katie Edwards entitled Rape Culture\, Gender Violence\, and Religion (Palgrave\, 2018). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here for Post Event Resources!

SUMMARY:Anzac Reflections: A Personal and Ecclesiastical Response
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the National Centre for Peace & Conflict Studies\n\n\n\nWar forces decision\, decisions have consequences\, and consequences form the warp and weft of history as disparate threads are woven together to form recognisable patterns. In this talk\, Bill Wiser will trace the trajectory of his father and one of his uncles as they navigated the reality of universal conscription in the United States during the Second World War. On the eve of another Anzac Day\, it is fitting to honour those who have served in uniform as well as those who chose to adhere to their conscientious objection to war. Bringing the topic into the present\, Bill will explore a current ecclesiastical expression of church community that strives to eliminate the causes of war through its commitment to peace\, a commitment that as recently as WW1 cost individual lives. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nBill Wiser is a pastor and chaplain who\, with his wife\, Grace\, has served in the aftermath of natural and human disasters in Australia and South Korea. His father joined the Civilian Public Service as a conscientious objector during WW2\, ending that chapter in federal prison; one of Bill’s uncles fought his way across Europe during the final months of the war with the 353rd Regiment of the 89th Infantry Division of General Paton’s Third Army. Bill’s personal connection with veterans of the Vietnam War led him to visit US troops in Saudi Arabia just prior to the outbreak of the Gulf War. While a vocal advocate for peace\, Bill carries a deep respect for those who serve in uniform. \n\n\n\nBill Wiser and his wife\, Grace\, are visiting from Upstate New York. They have been involved in pastoring\, chaplaincy\, and volunteer work\, as well as ecumenical initiatives and publishing. They are members of the Bruderhof Communities. \n\n\n\nFurther details about the event can be found on the poster\, available via the adjacent Download button. \n\n\n\n04APR-24_Bill Wiser_Anzac ReflectionsDownload

SUMMARY:Christ as Saviour and Example
DESCRIPTION:The Importance of Keeping These in the Right Order for the Gospel and the Church\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow do our beliefs about who Christ is and what He has done for us shape our understanding of the church’s role in the world? What happens when this order gets reversed\, and why does it matter for the church’s mission and message?  \n\n\n\nJoin Prof Kimlyn Bender as he explores these questions by looking at both the New Testament and insights from influential figures like Martin Luther\, Henri de Lubac\, and Eberhard Jüngel. By reflecting on how the church is meant to be God’s people\, the body of Christ\, and a community empowered by the Spirit\, we’ll discuss how these ideas shape the church’s identity and its calling in today’s world. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Kimlyn J. Bender holds the Foy Valentine Chair in Christian Theology and Ethics at Baylor University. A prolific author and one of the world’s foremost ecclesiologists\, he recently edited The T & T Clark Companion to Ecclesiology. An ordained Baptist minister raised on the prairie of North Dakota\, he and his wife Trudy live in Waco and have three children. \n\n\n\nRefreshments will be provided. \n\n\n\nThe session will not be recorded or livestreamed.

SUMMARY:Gregory of Nyssa's “On the Human Image” as a reworking of Plato's “Timaeus”
DESCRIPTION:Plato’s Timaeus was the most important text in the ancient world\, and beyond\, on the subject of the universe\, the structure of the cosmos and the human being within it\, the nature of the soul\, and providence. Gregory of Nyssa\, in the late fourth century\, I will argue\, reworked the Timaeus in his On the Human Image of God (previously known as On the Making of Man)\, filling it with Christian content. By seeing Gregory’s work as a reworking of the Timaeus\, we can gain a new perspective on the relationship between Christian theology and Greek philosophy\, while also being offered a picture of God\, creation\, and the human being quite different than what would come after Augustine.
