SUMMARY:Second Temple Judaism:
DESCRIPTION:Ancient Israel through the Destruction of the Second Temple\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEarthDiverse is pleased to announce a new course in its Religious Studies programme entitled: “Second Temple Judaism: Ancient Israel through the Destruction of the Second Temple” with Dr Dennis Green\, PhD. The course takes place on Wednesday nights 7:00-8:30pm beginning on 23 Oct 2024. This is a History and Religious Studies course designed towards learning more about the complex history and context of the Middle-East and the rise of early Judaism and the emergence of Christianity. More specifically\, this 6-week course examines the religio-cultural matrix spanning Ancient Israel\, Greek & Roman rule\, through the destruction of the Second Temple. This period produced Judaism\, Jesus and the earliest Jesus movement prior to the emergence of a new religion called Christianity. It was an era of rapid religious change and uncertainty\, massive cultural clashes and unending political turmoil\, yet it was also an era of great religious creativity and diversity. \n\n\n\nFor more information on this\, and our other history\, philosophy and language courses on offer this Term\, please visit our website at <https://earthdiverse.org.nz> \n\n\n\nThis course is available as an in-person course in Hamilton\, live-streamed via Zoom\, or available as video recordings to watch at your leisure. \n\n\n\nPricing is $160 Waged or $130 Unwaged\, including GST.

SUMMARY:Pakukore: Poverty\, by Design - Addressing the systemic causes of poverty and options for change.
DESCRIPTION:This conference addresses poverty in Aotearoa New Zealand. It analyses the economic\, governmental\, legal and institutional systems that have created poverty\, and which continue to lock too many whānau in its grip.  It asks whether a developed nation should continue to tolerate poverty and inequality. It invites speakers who work at the front lines in the fight against poverty to tell us of the lasting and severe harms it inflicts on people’s lives. The programme will be ordered around the systems that have played\, and continue to play\, key roles in underpinning and maintaining the crisis of poverty: economic management\, the housing\, health\, welfare and education systems\, the courts and corrections\, and short-term political thinking. The conference will also look at where hope lies\, and how we can choose to re-design Aotearoa to eradicate poverty and heal those who suffer its harms. \n\n\n\nSpeakers from research backgrounds and the front lines will provide evidence\, present joined-up thinking and examine where hope lies for eradicating poverty and assisting those who suffer its harms. \n\n\n\nThe conference will include sessions covering: The cost of poverty – Welfare and Inequality – State Violence and Legacies of Poverty – Housing and Homelessness – Health and (In)equality – The outcomes of Education – The Politics of Poverty – Lines of Hope. \n\n\n\nPoster-Poverty-by-Design-WebDownload

SUMMARY:Shaping Worship Across Generations
DESCRIPTION:AELP Gathering\n\n\n\nTheme: Intergenerational Worship: Shaping Worship Across Generations\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to invite you to the AELP Zoom Gathering\, a unique opportunity to join a wider audience from across the country. Whether you’re familiar with Zoom or new to the platform\, we’ve made sure this session will be engaging and interactive. Plus\, it will be recorded for later viewing on the NZLPA website\, so you won’t miss a moment! \n\n\n\nAbout the Session\n\n\n\nThis year’s theme\, “Intergenerational Worship: Shaping Worship Across Generations\,” will explore the significance of designing worship experiences that speak to people of all ages. Rev. Michael Lemanu\, Regional Enabler for Te Whānau Weteriana o Taranaki\, will lead a thought-provoking discussion on why intergenerational worship matters – even for congregations that may not have a large youth presence. \n\n\n\nHe will offer practical insights on how lay preachers and worship leaders can create services that are mindful of diverse generations\, contexts\, and backgrounds\, and how to make worship more inclusive for everyone. \n\n\n\nCo-Facilitators\n\n\n\nThe session will be co-facilitated by So’otaga Misikei\, the incoming Young Adults Leadership Development Coordinator for the Lower North Island Synod. So’otaga brings experience as a ministry student within the Taranaki District of the Methodist Church and will contribute his perspective on young adult leadership in worship. \n\n\n\nWhat to Expect\n\n\n\nThis session will follow a Talanoa (conversational) format\, allowing participants to share their experiences and insights. Alongside rich discussion\, we will explore the practical “mechanics” of worship\, including music\, liturgy\, inclusive language\, and creativity. Whether you’re a seasoned worship leader or a lay preacher\, you’ll leave with new ideas and inspiration for your ministry. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nClick here for Post Event Resources

SUMMARY:Auckland Ecumenical Lay Preachers Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The Bible and Violence\n\n\n\nAuckland Ecumenical Lay Preachers Gathering\n\n\n\nDr Emily Colgan of Trinity Methodist Theological College will join us to explore Violence in the Bible. \n\n\n\nThe Bible is a book that’s filled with violence. Sometimes\, it’s easy for us to recognize the violence being described in a text; at other times\, it’s hidden in plain sight\, and we might not even notice it’s there. What can we learn from biblical “texts of terror” that depict all manner of violence? And how might they speak to us about the violent acts\, words\, and ideas that we encounter in our world today? In this session\, Emily will share her thoughts on the enduring significance of biblical violence and the ways that it can inform our own understandings of contemporary violence. There will also be time for Q&A and Emily challenges us – “Ask Me Anything!” (about the Bible!). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Emily Colgan is Assoc Professor and the Ranston Lecturer in Biblical Studies at Trinity Methodist College\, Auckland. Emily is a bit of a Bible nerd who is utterly passionate about biblical interpretation incontemporary contexts. \n\n\n\nAfter completing a conjoint degree in Arts (Māori Studies) and Theology (Biblical Studies)\, Emily pursued postgraduate qualifications in Biblical Studies (Hebrew Bible). She earned her PhD in Theology in 2015. Emily worked as a tutor and a lecturer at the University of Auckland throughout her doctoral study. After submitting her PhD\, Emily worked as an adjunct lecturer for St John’s Theological College (in Tai Rawhiti) and the Pacific Theological College (in Suva\, Fiji). Emily began working at Trinity College in November 2015. \n\n\n\nEmily’s research focuses on the relationship between the Bible and contemporary social imaginaries\, asking about the ways in which biblical texts interact with communities in the present. She is particularly interested in ecological representations within the Bible and what it means to read Scripture in the context of climate change. Emily is currently working on an ecological commentary of the Book of Jeremiah for the Earth Bible Commentary series (Bloomsbury). She has also written chapters on the Bible and ecological thinking in The Oxford Handbook on Bible and Ecology (Oxford University Press\, forthcoming)\, The Bible and Art: Perspectives from Oceania (Bloomsbury\, 2017)\, The Nature of Things: Rediscovering the Spiritual in God’s Creation (Wipf and Stock\, 2016)\, and Sexuality\, Ideology and the Bible: Antipodean Engagements (Sheffield Phoenix\, 2015). \n\n\n\nEmily is also very interested in biblical depictions of gender and violence. Her most recent publication is a multi-volume work\, which she co-edited with Caroline Blyth and Katie Edwards entitled Rape Culture\, Gender Violence\, and Religion (Palgrave\, 2018). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nClick here for Post Event Resources!
