A Liturgical Gift for Good Friday

This simple home liturgy is offered as a way to mark Good Friday with depth and care, whether you are alone, with family, or in a small group. It invites a time of stillness and reflection at the foot of the cross — not rushing ahead to Easter, but holding space for sorrow, silence, and prayer.

If you’re using this with others, take time with each section. Don’t be afraid of the silence — it speaks in ways words cannot.

Good Friday Home Liturgy

For individual or small group use

Opening
Light a candle, if desired. Begin in silence.

Leader or Reader:
Today we remember the suffering and death of Jesus.
We gather not to rush to Easter, but to pause at the cross.

Prayer:
God of all compassion,
we come in stillness to this day of sorrow and mystery.
Hold us in your mercy as we remember the pain of the cross.
Be present with us in the shadows,
and speak to us through the silence.
Amen.

Reading 1: Isaiah 52:13 – 53:12
(The Suffering Servant)
Pause for silence afterward – 1–2 minutes.

Reading 2: John 19:16–30
(The Crucifixion)
After reading, observe silence again.

Reflection Questions (choose one or two if in a group):
• What phrase or image stood out to you?
• How does this story speak into the world we live in today?
• What does it mean to you that Jesus did not turn away from suffering?

Response – A Time of Prayer
You may pray aloud or silently. Use these prompts if helpful:

• For the suffering in our world…
• For those who feel abandoned or afraid…
• For courage to face injustice and grief…
• For hope that does not depend on circumstances…

Finish with:
God, in your mercy, hear our prayer.

Concluding Prayer
Jesus, you bore the weight of the world’s brokenness.
You did not run from pain,
but entered it with love.
Stay with us in the shadows.
Give us grace to wait at the cross,
until resurrection dawns.
Amen.

Leave in silence, or remain a while longer in quiet.
